NetBox
Source of truth for network, IP and data centre data.
NetBox is our default recommendation when network, IP and data centre data needs to live in one authoritative place. Its data model, IPAM and rack management cover day-to-day work in the data centre. Through its API, NetBox becomes the foundation for automation.
The benefit stands or falls with data maintenance. It has to be part of every change, otherwise the inventory goes out of date just like the Excel list before it.
- network and data centre data currently sits in Excel lists or several tools
- automation with Ansible or CI/CD needs a reliable data source
- IP addresses, racks, devices and connections are to be maintained together
- nobody owns data maintenance
- the main need is detailed building, power and cabling planning
- custom workflows and extensions matter more than a lean standard; in that case, look at Nautobot
