VMware vSphere
Mature, but its licensing model makes it a difficult choice for new initiatives.
vSphere is technically mature and standard in many data centres. Since the acquisition by Broadcom, it has only been available as subscriptions in a small number of bundles. Many users have reported higher costs since then.
Existing environments can keep running. For new initiatives and before a contract renewal, we compare it with alternatives such as KVM-based platforms. A switch needs planning: migration, backup, monitoring and the team's expertise.
- you run an existing environment under a current contract
- applications are certified for vSphere only
- you are building virtualisation from scratch
- a renewal is due and alternatives have not yet been compared
