KVM
Virtualisation in your own data centre.
KVM is the virtualisation built into the Linux kernel and the basis of many platforms, such as Proxmox VE or OpenStack. It is mature and incurs no licence costs for the hypervisor itself.
Since the licensing changes at VMware, many organisations have been looking at KVM-based alternatives. Licence costs can fall. Migration, backup integration, operational effort and Linux expertise need to be planned for.
- you run your own data centre and have Linux expertise
- a virtualisation platform with high licence costs is to be replaced
- clusters are to run on standard hardware
- applications are certified for one specific hypervisor only
- no team with Linux operations skills is available
